Learnerships & Internships

A Learnership is a work-based route that leads to a SAQA aligned and NQF registered qualification. Learnerships are directly related to an occupation or field of work and the training programme comprises of practical workplace (on-the-job) experience as well as structured theoretical training.

The duration of a Learnership varies and is usually dependent on the qualification objectives. A minimum duration of 12 months is the average requirement for a NQF Level 4 or 5 business related qualification.

Learnerships are accessible to both Employed and Unemployed candidates and may be conducted as funded or unfunded initiatives overseen by the relevant SETA.

A tripartite agreement (Learnership Contract) is signed by and between an Employer, a Learner and a Training Provider. This agreement is intended to set out the tasks and duties of each party. It is designed to ensure the quality of the training content and to protect the interests of everyone involved, especially Unemployed Learners who will earn a stipend for the fixed-term duration of the Learnership programme.

Learners that are already employed will still need to abide by their existing employment contracts as normal company policies apply. The employment contract supersedes any Learnership agreement although the Learnership agreement can be added as an addendum to the employment contract.


Learnerships are open for enrolment to anyone that meets the entry requirements of the SAQA qualification that the Learnership is aligned to. Internships are only open to Graduates. Interns are people that have already obtained a degree and who require the necessary workplace experience in order to fulfil the practical knowledge areas in their field of study.

According to the Learning Programme Matrix of the amended Broad Based Black Economic (B-BBEE) Codes of Good Practice effective May 2015, maximization of scorecard points can be claimed in categories B, C and D (Internships, Learnerships and Apprenticeships) whilst substantially contributing to the minimum 6% threshold spend, as salaries of Employed Learners can also be claimed as part of training expenditure.
